Hawaii Cycling Club’s training time trial at Hapuna Beach last Saturday provided cyclists with an opportunity to practice the beginning of the Ironman 70.3 Hawaii bike course.

Cyclists began every 30 seconds from the Hapuna Beach parking lot with a running mount, rode to Queen Kaahumanu Highway, turned right and rode south until Waikoloa Road, where they made a U-turn and cycled north to the finish line located just before the Hapuna Beach Prince Hotel entrance.

Mike DeCarli flew into first place, finishing the 12.7-mile in a time of 30 minutes, 17 seconds and averaging 25.16 mph. Sean Maynard was close behind, finishing second (30:53), and Helgi Olafson took third (32:50).

Sylvia Ravaglia won the women’s division with a time of 36:34, averaging 20.84 mph.

Congratulations to all who participated in the training time trial.

Runners moseyed, romped and scampered along Alii Drive on Sunday in Frozen Pea Productions’ CarboMan 10-Mile Mosey, Roadrunner 3.5-Mile Romp, and the Mighty Mouse 1-Mile Scamper.

The race proved to be a tough one, with the runs being longer and the sun shining brightly, bringing its warmth on all the pea-ticipants.

For the CarboMan 10-Mile Mosey, the athletes began in line with the banyan tree near Kailua Pier and followed Alii Drive south to the old Keauhou Beach Resort, where they turned around and cruised into the finish located back at the start.

Luis De La Torre won the CarboMan 10-Mile Mosey, finishing with an outstanding time of 1 hour, 3 minutes, 8 seconds. Close behind to earn a second-place finish was Jason Braswell (1:03:58). Penn Henderson claimed third (1:04:07).

Bree Wee finished fourth overall and first for the women at 1:05:39. Waverider Triathlon Club coach Kristin Drost claimed second (1:18:00), and Margaret Haderte was third (1:27:17).

Those who participated in the Roadrunner 3.5-Mile Romp started and finished in line with the banyan tree near the pier, ran south along Alii Drive until the turnaround at the Royal Sea Cliff Resort and ran back to town to cross the finish line.

Ziggy Bartholomy finished first with an amazing time of 21:54. Miles Cannon finished second (22:58), and Chico Barrios claimed third (26:19).

Michelle Aegler crossed the finish line ninth overall and first for the women at 30:14. Leahi Camacho was right behind to earn second (30:21), and Lori Montgomery placed third (31:03).

Runners who took part in the Mighty Mouse 1-Mile Scamper began in line with the banyan tree near the pier and went south along Alii Drive to Bubba Gump Shrimp Co., where they turned around and sprinted to the finish located back at the start line.

A barefooted Silas Wiley dashed across the finish line to claim first in 6:38. David Aegler took second with a time of 6:45, and Jake Lacey was third (6:57).

Jackie Hughes, the first female finisher, placed seventh overall at 8:33: Jaimie Yap and Amanda Schiff tied for second place (8:39), and Kiana Wiley claimed third (9:10).

Congratulations to all the pea-ticipants in this month’s Frozen Pea Productions race. You all did amazing. Hope to see you all out there for next month’s race.

This weekend, Team Mango Races will host the first ever Escape-2-Puuhonua training triathlon. This training race is taking the place of the Captain Cook Challenge. Because of safety hazards, race organizers cannot use the race course for the Captain Cook Challenge at this time. The new course for Escape-2-Puuhonua will be a half-mile swim in Honaunau Bay, 2-mile run on the Alaloa Hawaiian Trail, 21-mile (two laps) bike ride up Napoopoo Road and past the Painted Church with a 2,000-foot climb, and finishing with a 4-mile run on the Old Government Beach Road. The start and finish will be at Two-Step near the entrance to Honaunau Bay. Race start is set for 7 a.m.

On May 4, the Cinco de Mayo Splash kicks off the race for the Triple Crown of swimming (the Hapuna Roughwater Swim and the King’s Swim complete the series). The one-mile ocean swim will take place at Anaehoomalu Bay at 8 a.m. Race registration is now $20 for swimmers age 10 and up, and $15 for those age 9 and under. A $5 late fee will be in effect for swimmers who register after May 1.

The next Frozen Pea Productions race, Polar Bear’s Pinto Bean and Pinata Biathlon, will take place at 8:03 a.m. Hawaiian time May 12 near Kailua Pier. It includes a 3/4-mile swim and a 3.1-mile run. A shorter course features a 200-yard swim and a one-mile run. Relays are encouraged. As always, snorkels, fins, masks and strollers are all welcome on the course.

Hope to see you out there. Until next time, happy training.
